Kolkata sets May 27 deadline for illegal building hearings

KOLKATA: The KMC has set a deadline of May 27 for those who received new illegal building notices in the last 24 hours.

On Sunday, six under-construction buildings faced demolition, while several structures in Tiljala, Beleghata, and Kasba were declared illegal and received KMC hearing notices. Some of these notices were issued to buildings already occupied by residents.

Residents of Elite Primo on G J Khan Road in Tiljala protested, claiming the developer misled them about the properties’ legality. Five buildings, including a restaurant in Beleghata, received similar notices.

The Tiljala-Topsia area falls within the ‘Red Zone’ for alleged illegal buildings, alongside regions such as Garden Reach-Metiabruz, Rajabazar, Burrabazar, and parts off EM Bypass. “Approximately 70% of buildings in Tiljala-Topsia have been constructed illegally over the past two decades,” noted a civic official.

KMC officials are working diligently to compile lists of illegal buildings set for demolition. A building department official stated that KMC has requested the department to document deviations by property owners, highlighting how they kept KMC uninformed. “We will send the findings to HQ,” confirmed an official.

Ramu Yadav, a resident, voiced concerns, “How could we know that a building we’ve lived in for 10 years is illegal? If it’s demolished, where will we go? Some of us will present our documentation to KMC officials.”
