NAGPUR: In a move to enhance urban surveillance and monitor undocumented residents, Nagpur police have made tenant verification mandatory throughout the city. Landlords and property agents face criminal penalties for non-compliance.

Utilizing powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Nagpur CP Ravinder Singal issued an order instructing all landlords, flat owners, and property agents to provide complete tenant information to the nearest police station prior to renting out properties or within 48 hours of occupancy.

The order, effective from May 8 to July 7, requires landlords to submit details including tenants’ names, permanent addresses, prior residence information, mobile numbers, identity documentation, photos, rental agreements, and lease duration.

Police officials cited rising concerns over tenants residing in the city without proper documentation, complicating identification and investigations. The order aims to address potential unlawful activities and public safety risks that may arise from unverified tenant information.

Special attention is directed towards foreign nationals; landlords housing foreign tenants must now provide passport, visa, and FRRO registration details to authorities.

The notice also specifies that no property owner or agent is permitted to rent out properties without notifying the police and completing tenant verification. Police will conduct inspections and verification drives, focusing on illegal immigrants and undocumented residents.

Violations of this directive may result in criminal charges under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or call 112. This order applies across the Nagpur City Police Commissionerate.
