KOLKATA: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has commenced dispatching property tax bills for the year 2026-27 to households in Salt Lake. Taxpayers can benefit from a 5% tax rebate (excluding any arrears) if payments are made by the due date.
For those who have not settled their past dues from the previous financial year, a 10% penalty along with 10% interest applies to the total overdue amount as of March 31.
Tax payments can be made online at www.bmcwbgov.in using debit or credit cards, net banking, or through the Bharat Bill Payment System. Physical payments can also be made at designated bank branches across the BMC area between 11 AM and 3 PM.
For payment by cheque, it must be deposited at least two working days before the due date to qualify for the rebate. Taxpayers are required to write their assessee number, holding number, bill number, quarter number, contact number, and email ID on the back of the cheque. If a cheque is not accepted for any reason, payment can be made via cash, incurring a clerical fee of Rs 250 per tax bill.
BMC officials highlighted that there has been a 20% increase in property tax and mutation fee collections over the last financial year, ending March 31, due to residents in wards 27 and 28 (Mahisbathan and Nayapatti) paying property tax for the first time since last year. Previously, these areas dealt with ‘khajna’ or land revenue payments through the local BLRO office. The BMC has set a target of collecting Rs 44 crore in property tax for this financial year.
