LEH: On Wednesday, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena presented renewed lease deeds to 79 residents of the Housing Colony area in Leh, describing the act as a historic step towards securing their legal rights.

According to an official spokesperson, the renewal of these lease deeds, which had been pending for years, will greatly benefit residents by providing them with legal ownership and tenure security.

This renewal will also grant access to banking services, such as loans, simplify property transactions, and allow land to be sold at its market value, the spokesperson added.

While addressing the first group of beneficiaries, Saxena emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating that this measure will lead to legal security, peace of mind, and financial empowerment for the residents.

He aligned the initiative with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘housing for all’ and enhanced living standards, noting that the renewal of lease deeds is a critical step in granting citizens secure housing rights and essential services, especially in the challenging geography of Ladakh.

Saxena mentioned that special camps were organized to accelerate the resolution of outstanding cases.

The process was executed under the Jammu and Kashmir Land Grants Act of 1960, ensuring full legal validation and allowing beneficiaries access to banking services and property transactions, he explained.

Saxena assured that similar camps will continue to be organized to resolve all pending cases of expired lease deeds, ensuring that no deserving beneficiary is overlooked.

Stazin Otsal, Nambardar of Housing Colony, noted that some residents, who have lived in the area since 1975, faced challenges due to expired lease deeds that barred them from obtaining bank loans or selling their properties.

Sonam Rigzin, Nambardar of Ibex Colony, shared that about 1,000 families reside in the colony, many of whom have served in the Indian Army, and would benefit greatly if the administration addresses their land-related concerns.
