Indore’s 450 Illegal Colony Legalization Faces Roadblock

INDORE: The hopes of residents in over 450 unauthorized colonies have been dashed as various government departments have raised objections to their regularization.

Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has already legalized more than 200 colonies in previous phases, but the remaining cases face challenges due to complex land-use disputes and missing no-objection certificates (NOCs).

As per IMC’s additional commissioner, Manoj Pathak, the regularization process has encountered obstacles after public notices were published for the remaining colonies. Objections have been raised by departments including Nazul, IDA, T&CP, and the Housing Board.

ACS Sanjay Dubey elaborated that the current legalization policy is mainly for colonies developed on private land without prior permission. “No provisions exist for the legalization of colonies on urban land ceiling land, green belts, or lands belonging to the IDA or Housing Board,” he stated.

Investigations by IMC’s colony cell have revealed critical issues. Over 150 colonies are located on land that was previously designated under the urban land ceiling act. Though the act was repealed in 2000, these lands remain legally challenged. Additionally, many colonies have encroached upon protected green belts or land designated for parks and public pathways.

These settlements often fail to comply with essential urban planning criteria, including approved layout plans and development fee payments.

For the few colonies that do navigate these complexities successfully, the rewards are substantial. Once regularized, residents gain access to bank loans secured against their property, and development funds from schemes like Amrit Yojana, as well as MP and MLA funds, can be legally utilized for infrastructure development.

Residents are also encouraged to establish resident welfare associations to enhance the provision of civic amenities.
