TIDCO’s Vijayawada Colonies Introduce New Township Model

VIJAYAWADA: The urban housing landscape in Andhra Pradesh is experiencing a notable transformation as the Andhra Pradesh Township and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APTIDCO) introduces integrated living models for economically weaker sections. Instead of merely offering standalone houses, the state is now developing “mini townships” that blend housing with essential infrastructure, livelihoods, and social amenities.

APTIDCO Managing Director Sunil Kumar Reddy highlights the shift in focus from mere construction to ensuring complete habitability. “In the past, housing projects often concluded with the handover of units. Today, our goal is to create fully livable colonies equipped with roads, water supply, drainage, lighting, and livelihood support systems,” he elaborates. Central to this transformation is the establishment of robust physical infrastructure. In TIDCO layouts, cement concrete (CC) roads and internal networks connected to main roads facilitate seamless movement. New underground drainage and sewerage systems are systematically replacing older, inadequate open drainage systems, while LED street lighting enhances safety and cuts energy costs.

“Water supply, historically a challenge in low-income housing, is being effectively tackled through dedicated systems integrated with AMRUT 2.0. Overhead tanks, pipelines, and continuous supply mechanisms are minimizing reliance on water tankers,” Reddy asserts. Stormwater drains are also being added to mitigate flooding during monsoons.

An emphasis on energy efficiency within homes is a significant addition. Beneficiaries receive energy-saving appliances such as LED lights and fans. “This initiative not only enhances comfort but also reduces monthly electricity bills, making these homes more affordable to maintain,” Reddy notes.

Perhaps the most impactful element is the introduction of TIDCO Livelihood Centres (TLCs). These centres promote self-employment, especially among women, working closely with the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas. TLCs encourage self-help groups, facilitate access to bank credit, and provide skill development and entrepreneurship training. “Livelihood is critical for sustainability. Through TLCs, we’re ensuring residents not only inhabit these spaces but also achieve economic growth,” the MD explains. The government is also creating social infrastructure, such as anganwadi centres, community halls, schools, and basic health facilities near these layouts. Furthermore, digital governance and transparency measures are being implemented as part of these initiatives.
