BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has signed a partnership with the Singapore-based consultancy firm Surbana Jurong to develop a comprehensive master plan for the proposed Bhubaneswar New City. This initiative is a part of a major urban expansion project aimed at shaping the future growth of the capital.
Covering nearly 800 acres across the mouzas of Gothapatna, Malipada, and Dasapur, the project aims to establish a multi-economic growth zone, aligned with the state’s long-term vision of Vikshit Odisha 2036.
Officials indicated that the new city will be designed as a transit-oriented urban hub, prioritizing efficient public transport, reduced travel time, and integrated mixed land use. It will also focus on providing affordable and inclusive housing for various income groups.
BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana stated that the city will feature modern infrastructure, including facilities for MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions), innovation hubs, and advanced data management centers.
Additionally, the project will emphasize creative placemaking, incorporating central forest parks, gateway plazas, and lively public spaces to enhance community interaction and urban livability.
According to officials, the new city will implement smart and sustainable infrastructure solutions to enhance climate resilience and environmental sustainability. The BDA has been assigned as the lead agency for this initiative.
Once realized, the new city is projected to manage the planned expansion of Bhubaneswar, curb unregulated urban sprawl, and strengthen urban infrastructure in the capital region.
Urban planner Dipu Nanda remarked that the proposed plan looks promising, potentially positioning Bhubaneswar among the leading metropolitan areas in the country. He emphasized the need for timely execution of the project.
Officials also highlighted that the initiative is expected to create job opportunities, attract investments, and foster inclusive growth by ensuring access to affordable housing and essential community amenities for all societal segments.
