IMPHAL | NEW DELHI: Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has sanctioned the construction of 5,000 homes for the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Manipur, as confirmed by officials.
The decision came after a meeting between the minister and Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in the national capital on Monday evening.
Khemchand was accompanied in the meeting by the state’s two deputy chief ministers, Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho.
Officials stated that the homes will be built under PMAY-G for the Financial Year 2025-26, aimed at assisting the IDPs affected by the ongoing law and order crisis (ethnic violence).
Chouhan expressed his commitment to aiding in restoring peace and normalcy to the state.
The proposal for these homes was submitted by the Manipur government earlier this month.
The Union Rural Development Ministry has also sanctioned a special Awass+ 2024 household survey to collect information on the eligible affected households.
The state government has been permitted to continue registering eligible individuals for the special project under PMAY-G.
These houses will be constructed following the provisions outlined in the FFI of PMAY-G.
The state government may also approve houses for eligible beneficiaries under the special project who had previously received assistance (one or more installments) under PMAY-G but whose homes were destroyed during the ethnic violence.
Since May 2023, at least 260 individuals have lost their lives and thousands have been displaced amid ethnic conflicts between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the hills-based Kuki-Zo groups.
Furthermore, in January, the Manipur government expressed its goal to resettle 10,000 internally displaced families by March 31, stating that 16,500 IDPs have already been resettled in the state.
