Kochi: Delay in Allocating Apartment Units in Rajiv Awas Yojana

KOCHI: The allocation of apartment units for beneficiaries in the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) housing complex is facing further delays. Corporation authorities have announced that the trial run for the facility’s sewage treatment plant will take place on March 10.

Selection procedures for beneficiaries are still ongoing. Mayor V K Minimol stated during a corporation council meeting on Tuesday that only 211 beneficiaries have submitted complete documentation, and the allotment process has been finalized for 198 of them. The total number of beneficiaries listed by the corporation is 398. Additionally, beneficiaries are required to contribute their share; this funding, along with rental income from the ground floor shops, will be used to maintain common amenities in the complex.

The mayor also informed the council about plans to demolish and reconstruct the Vyttila zonal office. Furthermore, she announced the upcoming opening of an Indira Canteen at Edappally, with the IDBI bank agreeing to support it through its CSR funds.

A proposal to set a fee for body cremations at public gas crematoriums will be presented at the next council meeting. The mayor requested that officials prepare a report assessing the condition of the city’s crematoriums.

Several councillors voiced concerns over the severe drinking water shortage in various city areas. Mayor Minimol mentioned that multiple meetings have been held, including one with the water resources minister, to address the issue, resulting in a decision to increase water pumping from the Aluva treatment plant.
