RANCHI: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) is accelerating its revenue collection efforts across all wards, focusing on holding tax payments to meet the target of Rs 100 crore for the current financial year.
This intensified initiative has started to yield results, as field inspections have uncovered significant under-assessment and misreporting of property details in various city wards.
RMC revenue teams conducted thorough checks on commercial and residential properties, evaluating declared areas, usage types, road widths, basement usage, and rainwater harvesting setups. Inspections revealed that many properties were paying taxes based on significantly lower areas or incorrect classifications.
In ward number 45, Srishti Hospital was found to be paying commercial holding tax on 12,000 sq ft, while the actual commercial area measured 22,870 sq ft, revealing a discrepancy of 10,870 sq ft.
Similarly, in ward number 35, RSP House (Ranjit & Company) reported a holding tax for 6,160 sq ft, but physical verification indicated a commercial usage of 24,491 sq ft.
Irregularities were also noted in wards 1, 5, 6, and 45, where basements were improperly categorized as residential while used as storage or rented out, hotels were paying residential taxes, incorrect road widths were declared to lower tax rates, and long-standing holdings had unresolved tax dues.
The RMC stated, “Our revenue drive’s physical verifications have unveiled inconsistencies in property area, usage, and tax categories. The tax collection agency is instructed to promptly amend these records and recover outstanding dues as per the Jharkhand Municipal Act.”
The civic body cautioned that property owners who do not voluntarily update their property details regarding area or usage may face severe penalties.
