AHMEDABAD: As part of preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is intensifying its efforts to enhance air quality by focusing on reducing pollution from construction activities.

To achieve this, AMC has introduced the Good Construction Practices Policy, which mandates that construction sites with a built-up area over 20,000 sq. m must install dust sensors, air quality display boards, and CCTV cameras. Currently, around 140 construction sites throughout the city are equipped with these air quality sensors, which are routinely monitored. Enforcement actions have been taken against non-compliant sites, resulting in penalties totaling Rs 1.71 crore in 2024-25 and Rs 1.16 crore in 2025-26.

The municipal authority has scientifically identified local sources of pollution and marked nine pollution hotspots, including areas like Pirana, Rakhial, Raikhad, Bopal, Vatva, SP Stadium, Chandkheda, and Maninagar, as well as 16 construction and demolition waste collection centers.

Through grants from the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and the 15th Finance Commission, AMC has deployed 16 truck-mounted mist machines. Six are continuously operated at the Pirana dumpsite and surrounding areas, while the remaining 10 are assigned to high-pollution routes. Additionally, 62 mechanical road sweeping machines are currently in use to help reduce particulate matter in the city.
