NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi announced on Monday that it has extended its property tax amnesty program, ‘SUNIYO,’ until February 28, 2026. Officials have encouraged property owners throughout the capital to step forward and clear their outstanding dues, as the late fee will remain unchanged at 5%.
Under the Sumpattikar Niptaan Yojana (SUNIYO), taxpayers can receive a complete waiver of property tax, interest, and penalties for all years before 2020-21, provided they pay the principal tax for the current fiscal year (2025-26) and the previous five years.
Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh described this as a golden opportunity, urging citizens to regularise their tax records while the opportunity exists. He noted that the initiative has already assisted numerous residents in settling arrears without penalties or interest.
“We encourage all property owners and occupiers to take full advantage of this chance and resolve their outstanding property tax dues without facing penalties or interest,” Singh stated.
The mayor’s office reported a positive response to the scheme, with 1,78,923 taxpayers already participating, leading to property tax collections of Rs 1,032.91 crore as of February 1.
Of this amount, Rs 200.45 crore was collected from 1,28,802 residential properties, while Rs 832.45 crore came from 50,121 non-residential properties, officials indicated. Notably, 96,169 first-time taxpayers have joined the tax network under SUNIYO, contributing Rs 367.26 crore.
For the current fiscal year, Delhi’s property tax collection has reached Rs 2,828.49 crore from 12.62 lakh taxpayers, which marks a significant increase from the Rs 1,908.06 crore collected from 10.43 lakh taxpayers during the same period last year. This represents a 48.24% increase in revenue and a 20.99% rise in the number of taxpayers, according to officials.
The total collection for FY 2024-25 amounted to Rs 2,132.29 crore, highlighting the impact of the amnesty scheme.
