Nashik Civic Body Boosts Property Tax Recovery for 2025-26

NASHIK: The municipal authority has decided to intensify its property tax recovery efforts to achieve the collection goal for the financial year 2025-26. Starting next week, new notices will be sent to property owners who failed to pay their dues during the four-month amnesty scheme that was active from September to December 2025.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has set a property tax collection target of ₹275 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26. As of January 22, the civic body has collected only ₹212 crore, resulting in a remaining shortfall of ₹63 crore within the next two months. In contrast, NMC collected ₹215 crore during the same timeframe last year, indicating a decrease of ₹3 crore this year compared to the previous year’s figures.

Civic officials attribute the slower recovery to the deployment of numerous NMC staff for election duties over the past three months. With civic elections now completed, the administration is preparing to implement aggressive recovery measures for the remaining financial year. Officials noted that zonal teams are being tasked with expediting visits to properties with outstanding dues and initiating recovery actions where necessary.

NMC’s total property tax demand for 2025-26 is set at ₹275 crore. However, the accumulated backlog of outstanding dues from defaulters over the past five to six years has reached nearly ₹500 crore. The administration is concentrating on recovering as much of this old amount as possible, alongside meeting this year’s target.

During the amnesty scheme held from September to December, the civic body managed to collect ₹66 crore from defaulters, offering penalty waivers ranging from 85% to 95% for those who paid their dues in full. Approximately 86,000 defaulters benefited from this initiative, receiving rebates totaling ₹22 crore, which boosted NMC’s total property tax revenue to ₹208 crore by December’s end.

However, recovery efforts slowed in January. Between January 1 and 22, NMC collected merely ₹4 crore, prompting the administration to enhance its collection strategies. Officials announced that intensified field actions, notifications to chronic defaulters, and stricter follow-ups will be prioritized in the upcoming weeks.
